It should start with a realisation: in all likelihood, your life is not nearly as bad as you think it is. Forget the 3000-word assignment that is due in 72 hours. Forget the number of years you’ve already wasted on a degree you still have no idea why you started. Forget about exams. Forget about being anxious. Forget about the unattainable guy you’ve fallen for. Forget his girlfriend.
Forget about everything the stops you being happy and remember a few other things. Remember you live in one the wealthiest, most highly developed and generally awesome countries in the world. Remember that whilst you’re studying and enjoying comfortable employment, Europe teeters on the brink of another collapse and the youth employment rate in Spain is over 50%.
Remember you’ll never be this beautiful, intelligent, carefree and without responsibility again. Remember you never spend Friday or Saturday night studying. Remember staying in won’t mean you get that assignment finished. Remember the friends who you never get to see enough of and forget the ones you see too much of.
Go out. Text a friend and ask if they have plans. If they do and you’re not invited don’t be disheartened. Ask another. If everything falls through buy a bottle of wine; make a playlist that includes a song from Madonna, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé and pretend you live in Manhattan. Get drunk and message that guy you’ve fallen for on Facebook. If they never reply, move on with your life and pretend it never happened.
If you do go out, kiss a stranger. Tell your friends they were the most attractive person you’ve ever kissed. Even if they weren’t. If they were attractive, get their number and ask for brunch the next day. Stop being afraid of being too forward. Stop being afraid of having fun and start enjoying life. There will always be another assignment, you won’t ever be this young again.
