How To Be A Better Undergraduate

Finish that assignment you’ve been meaning to do for days and start studying for that exam now. Stop putting off readings and essays and finish them. Nothing will make you more satisfied or happy as an undergraduate than finishing everything that you’ve been putting off. Make at least one friend in every class so you have a reason to keep going. Start taking classes you enjoy. Stop drifting and anchor yourself to something you actually care about.

Sleep better, not more. Get up early and actually eat breakfast. Stop staying up past midnight, everything that exists on the Internet at 2am will still be there tomorrow morning. If it isn’t, it’s probably not worth it anyway. Stop posting every inane thing that happens in your life on Facebook or Twitter. People will like you more. Read more books. Listen to albums not songs. Get to know at least one television show really well and figure out your life through the crises of your favourite character.

See your parents more. Get drunk with them and ask them all the questions you’ve always been too afraid to ask. Have coffee and talk about the book you’re reading. Tell them about your boyfriend or girlfriend. Tell them when you’re happy and tell them when you’re not. Start thanking them more. Stop being condescending and realise that all the problems you see in them are the same ones you have.

But get a job that pays the bills and means you don’t have to live them. If you’re lucky, get one that means you can travel. Go to a country that is confronting. Know that every thing you take for granted is a luxury and everything that makes you frustrated is a #firstworldprobem. Meet someone at a youth hostel and realise you know more about them after one night than most of your friends who you’ve known for years. When you get home, don’t waste your time with these friends.

Go out at least once every week. Find a club where you feel comfortable losing all of your inhibitions and dancing like Beyonce. If you don’t find one, get drunk and pretend you’re Beyonce anyway. If you know you’ve been in a relationship for too long, break up with them. You’re never going to look back on it and wish you had stayed with them for one more month. Make out with someone because you feel sorry for them. Have a one-night stand with a stranger because you feel sorry for yourself.

Stop and think about all the things you’d do if you weren’t afraid. Now do them. And don’t regret anything.
